E-learning in Orthodontics: A more efficient and effective way to learn

Key Points

  • Virtual conferences and events provide a range of additional benefits when compared with traditional formats.
  • Research has shown that online learning, specifically in medical and dentistry subjects, can be more effective than traditional learning.
  • 3/4 of dental practitioners value the online learning portal as the most FAVOURITE feature of the BOSS 10905NAT Graduate Diploma of Digital Orthodontic Treatments.

It will be no surprise to you that, as a founder of an education provider, I am a strong advocate for learning and professional development. Over the years, I have travelled the globe presenting and attending conferences, to learn from and engage with the best minds in our industry.

Prior to 2020, I was a little unsure what to expect from a virtual learning platform or how to harness it for maximal effect for my students. Given the pandemic years and inability for people to travel, with increasing demand for education during lockdown from dental practitioners, BOSS innovated fast to create the world’s first 100% online Australian and UK accredited diploma qualifications in the field of digital orthodontics.

However, we understand there are still some concerns and questions about this new way of education.

Would the content resonate with me in the same way via a screen, rather than a human being?

Would I be able to interact with the speakers and the audience?

Would I get bored?

Now, having had the time to design and deliver our online training, I can honestly say this is the most powerful way to learn for many of our students, and here is why.

Customisable learning experience

The on-demand digital e-learning platforms allows participants to revisit things that resonates with them, or that they may have missed the first time around, taking away the need for frantic note taking and the fear of not remembering a crucial part of a lecture that has cost you thousands of dollars to attend (including travel).

Watch a video at 3x speed or 1x – choice is yours!

Digital note-taking

I love taking notes during lectures or seminars and have on more than one occasion been known to exit conference rooms carrying reams of scribbled covered pages.

Being able to take notes digitally is a game changer. It allows one to make more relevant, detailed notes and avoid the timeless chore of deciphering their own doctor-like handwriting (lol – I am guilty too!). And these can then be emailed easily for future reference or sorted digitally for quick find searches on mobile devices.

Fruitful discussions

The sound of silence isn’t unfamiliar when the speaker opens up to the room for questions at traditional face to face events. Typically, only a small number of attendees are undeterred by the crowd and willing to raise their hands. Even when a good question is asked things can be lost in translation, especially at larger events.

The live chat functionality of webinars and e-learning portals is an excellent solution to this. Not only does it remove the stage fright element for the audience, but it allows the audience to more easily understand and deeply consider the ideas of others.

The social sacrifice

Unfortunately, and depending on your disposition for other people, there may be one significant drawback to online learning, this being a lack of human contact. I do personally miss the personal interaction, conversation and networking with other dental practitioners that would usually be a feature of traditional conferences. Unfortunately, this is something that simply cannot be replaced virtually and this social sacrifice is a definite drawback of the virtual orthodontic learning for me.

As the format evolves, I feel there may be an opportunity to integrate other technology and platforms such as Slack (as we do with our BOSS students and Alumni) to enable more organic conversations during and following the event. This may not replace boozy hotel bar chats after the event, but it is certainly a step in the right direction and from a learning perspective, I cannot fault the digital conference format. A virtual fun run can also help here where participants all undertake a group activity, separately and post online pictures or statistics like they would share in a conversation.

A more effective and efficient way to learn

In my opinion, the online format is a more effective and efficient way to learn. A sentiment echoed by 90% of enrolled dental practitioners who voted the BOSS and The Digital Orthodontic College’s  e-learning platform as their favourite component of the course (Reference – 2021 BOSS participant survey), followed by the fact being an Orthodontist-led course.

Online learning has become a necessity and popularised throughout the pandemic. However research dating back to 2007 highlighted the benefit of web based educational materials for dental students via the enablement of students to choose the time, place, and pace of study and that a web-based curriculum can decrease classroom time and provide self-paced, active learning experiences (P. A. Reynolds et al, British Dental Journal).

Further research suggests using broader medical education demonstrated high engagement and efficacy of the format, especially when multimedia resources, live teaching and the facilitation of synchronous communication is provided (Broudo &. Walsh. MEDICOL: online learning in medicine and dentistry).

This is why our Australian & UK accredited 10905NAT Graduate Diploma of Digital Orthodontic Treatments not only provides an industry leading evidence based curriculum, but an blended online experience that provides students with a range of live and recorded lectures, a comprehensive resource library including the latest fulltext journals and access to our participant & alumni slack channels where treatments and live cases are discussed regularly.

In a recent survey of BOSS students, 100% of respondents, of which the majority had more than 5-years clinical experience and were either practice owners or associates, would recommend BOSS to their peers. Along with the overwhelming majority placing the e-learning portal above all other aspects of the course, 95% of respondents agreed that the course curriculum was well presented and organised, whilst their questions were answered quickly and thoroughly.

  1. As a new mother I have also found online learning a God send! In fact, I type this while holding a napping sick toddler!! I would not have been able to manage travel or strictly scheduled lecture times with the circumstances I have had.

    1. That’s fantastic to hear! It’s definitely the way to go when it comes to education especially for professional females like yourself! Thank you for your invaluable feedback.

  2. I am absoloutely loving my Easter break with going through my e learning portal . I never thought I will learn ortho after my UG as I was not interested at all. but its happening now. I loved the small lectures of 15-20mints duration which , once completed, not exhausting and feel accomplished. can able to take digital notes, pause and repeat to clarify again is great. Also Dr V ‘s illustration of the history of orthodontic evolution , facial growth patterns etc was quite interesting. Overall I am so glad I enrolled for the course! Thank you Dr V

  3. E-learning for me, has been great! This is my second Graduate Diploma utilising this method of learning. The key benefit for me is being able to learn and study when it suits me personally.

What People Are Saying

  • I completed the BOSS UK Diploma in 2021 and when it became available, signed up for the AU course as well. I completed the AU course at the end of last year and can honestly say BOSS (now Digital Orthodontic College) has completely changed my approach to clear aligner treatments and increased my confidence with treatment planning immensely. The fact that the course is 100% online was a huge drawcard for me initially since I have two young children, work clinically part-time and run my own business. It allowed me the flexibility to study when I had the chance and didn’t result in any loss of clinical time. Dr V is extremely passionate about orthodontics and more importantly sharing her wisdom and that comes through in her approach to teaching. The course is extremely comprehensive (NB: the AU course has quite a few complex assessments) and covers everything starting from the basics of tooth movement, which sets a good foundation and is therefore suitable even for beginners. The monthly/bimonthly webinars allow students to share cases and is a safe space, non-judgmental and therefore an incredible learning platform. I had been doing clear aligner treatments prior to starting this course, but BOSS helped me see patients with new eyes and has overhauled my treatment planning approach. I would not hesitate to recommend this course to anyone interested in learning, or to extend their knowledge about, clear aligner treatments.

Thank you so much Dr V!

  • The Australian accredited 10905NAT Graduate Diploma of Digital Orthodontic Treatment offers comprehensive training in the field, gives the candidate the opportunity to do things in a self-paced manner, while getting a personalised 1-on-1 learning experience with Dr Vandana Katyal. It was an excellent choice for me and gave me the flexibility to get the well-designed training done in my own time frame. I would strongly recommend the course to any practitioners who is looking to upskill themselves with a no-compromise high quality course, while also having to juggle between busy practices and family schedules.

  • I started this course unsure of how much I would benefit. The in-person lectures were fantastic (although the course is now 100% online) where I made good friends and learned a lot. The online resources are extensive and second to none, accessible at your convenience. The webinars were great – usually with the right mix of teaching, cases demonstrated and the attendees’ cases being discussed. I was also invited to deliver a webinar on intra-oral scanners, 3D printers and in house aligner manufacturing (from a dentist’s point of view) – which I enjoyed.
Most of all the course gave significantly more confidence what can be done with aligners, how plan the setup efficiently with the end in mind and how to make the processes to get there smoother. As a result, a MUCH larger chunk of my work is now aligner based. My conversion rate for aligner treatments has definitely increased along with my confidence. The course has easily paid for itself. Full disclosure: I was invited to deliver a webinar on intra-oral scanners, 3D printers and in house aligner manufacture to my BOSS batch mates, which I also thoroughly enjoyed doing. I declined any remuneration for this, although it was offered.

  • Since I have joined the postgraduate diploma in orthodontics I have noticed all the applied practical learning/knowledge on my patients and I am only half way through the year. Dr Vandana is a genuine educator. She goes way beyond to simplify every lecture and I really like her evidence based information and that is available for us 24/7. Her webinars helped a lot for busy dentists and loved the feedback we get in the one on one sessions with our cases. It make us think every step of the way. But the best thing I like is to see she is giving back to the community and her association with Smile Train in helping children with cleft palate is just beyond words. Thank you so much for being nice and approachable.

  • Received my Diploma in Digital Orthodontics from BOSS and couldn’t be more stoked! Huge shout out to Dr Vandana Katyal and the BOSS team for a wonderful year. I would recommend BOSS to every dentist no matter their level of experience with Orthodontics and clear aligners. Starting off with barely any orthodontic experience, I have commenced about 9 cases in the matter of months and BOSS gave me the confidence to predictably deliver results for my patients through clear aligners which are the future of modern orthodontics.
    Dr Sarang Sathe, Dentist NSW
  • I chose Boss’s clear aligner diploma because I wanted to know the latest evidence based practice to enhance my treatment planning and case execution. I now have a much better understanding of how to diagnose, what movements can be done and what will get me into trouble. The flexible nature of the course delivery also fit perfectly into full time work and my otherwise packed schedule. The monthly case presentation webinars are also great to not only get feedback from Dr Katyal, but also to validate your own thoughts self-assess and see how you are tracking with your learning.
